Dismembered/ Remembered
Video Installation, Interactive, 2025
Data
Braid structures and strand number, and different methods provided by participants( my friends, inside and outside of Iran), and the direction based on their geographic distance and position to the exhibition site.
In Dismembered/Remembered, a wax candle-globe hangs suspended, pierced by braided wicks that rise from its surface and stretch across the ceiling, where they converge with other tangled lines in shifting configurations. Together they form a plural network I call the non-map, a refusal of conventional cartography that divides. Instead, these lines connect and hold.
The labor of braiding speaks to feminine resistance and the generative power of repetitive, persistent care. Each braid follows a different technique and strand count, so tension, thickness, and lay vary from line to line.
Projected onto the braided ceiling, a video shows a flame traveling along a wick, a choreography of burning that gestures toward what has been lost. The space becomes a map of multiple timelines and interdependencies, resisting containment while holding together what is always at risk of falling apart.
