In this performance, I ignite the wicks and hold a fragile wax globe in my hands. Two wicks emerge from my mapped locations, Connecticut and Tehran, burning toward one another along a straight chord through the sphere. As the flames advance, my black dress is stained by falling white wax; the weight grows harder to hold as time passes and the fabric accrues what melts. Here, I practice staying close to the embodied feelings I’ve carried since leaving Tehran, in dialogue with interviews I conducted with displaced people. This performance serves as autoethnographic evidence of what the body lives and witnesses to this longing, and is my attempt to articulate that experience as a dynamic cartographic gesture.
